OK - on the Dakota Digital website go to Automotive, then in the right side
column "Speed/ Tach Interface", then you can click on the "Universal
Speedometer Signal Interface" to get to the SGI-5 description.

Alec,

All U.S. SECs were electronic speedometers. I didn't read yours carefully
enough to realize you have a Euro that "might" have a mechanical speedo. If
someone can verify that yours is an electronic speedo, then the Dakota
Digital solution is around $85 and fifteen minutes work to install. I put a
3.07:1 in my '87 560SEC in place of the stock 2.47:1 unit. BIG difference in
drivability!! Between the H&R springs, slotted rotors, new Bilsteins, and
the limited slip differential, it's a completely different car than the one
I purchased in 1996.

It took me about fifteen minutes to install the DD SGI-5 behind the
instrument cluster and then with the help of a GPS unit, another half-hour
to calibrate it. I calibrated it at 45mph, then just HAD to check it out at
90 mph to verify. It was accurate, but I really should check it out at 125
just to make sure. :-)

Later,

Mike R.

Congratulations Alec! Looking forward to hearing

about your next race meeting...

Mike, since you're is recommending a digital speedometer interface, does
that mean that

the speedometers on our cars are not mechanical in nature? (sorry if this is
a stupid question).

Just come back from test driving my 500SEC (Euro) after fitting the diff
from a W116 350SE.

That's a 2.11:1 changed to a 3.27:1 if my memory serves me right.

What a phenomenal difference!

Feels like someone fitted half a dozen turbo's!

What do you do about the speedo now?

I don't care that it reads gibberish but I'm scared to break it when I wind
it so far off the clock.

Any advice???

Regards

Alec D.
