I was hoping I could take the cable drive gear out of a 350 and fit it to the 500 box. I haven't looked to see what drives the cable on a merc but on some other vehicles they use a nylon geared drive off the gearbox and they are interchangeable with drives with differing numbers of gears....
That would be the simple fix if that were possible??
Regarding fuel consumption, I'm pretty sure that's gone to pot but is of little concern to me as I m racing this car.
The speedo is now probably over reading by about 50% so I'm scared of breaking the speedo. In the interim I will simply disconnect the speedo.

May I suggest the most simple way for speedo correction would be comparison via a GPS readout. If possible memorise or photograph the errors, disassemble the speedo from the cluster, remove the pointer (with two teaspoons opposite using even pressure) and re-fitting to make some sort of corrections.Don't expect corrections on full scale but you should get a better idea ot common speeds.Maybe you can drive the car without outer cluster outer connected and lightly re-fit the pointer for estimates around middle speeds? While the cluster is out consider a full clean, fit FLANKED LED's for lighting upgrade,or even white dials with chrome rings? How is your fuel economy now? RPM at highway speed?

Help! I am close to buying a very nice 500SEC, 1985. I own an 88 560SL, but am not as familiar with SECs. Here is my first question, and yes, I am sure I will have more.

Everything I read and hear is that this car came with no options available. All the pics I see look the asme - there is no rear spoiler; yet the one I am looking at has a rear spoiler. Is that an aftermarket add-on? Does it mean the car is AMG? (I assume not).

Also, how does the look (not the mechanics/engine, etc.) of the 560SEC differ from the 500SEC?

Need help from you experts. Thanks very much.

Congratulations Alec! Looking forward to hearing
about your next race meeting...

Mike, since you're is recommending a digital speedometer interface,
does that mean that
the speedometers on our cars are not mechanical in nature? (sorry if
this is a stupid question).

It depends on what part of the world you are but basically here is the list of superficial differences I can think of:

1.. the 500's have grooved lower door mouldings whilst the 560's are smooth.
2.. the 560's have headlight wipers whilst 500's don't (not true in all markets)
3.. the 560 has electrically operated rear blinds.
4.. the 560 has ABS
5.. then various interior improvements such as electrically adjustable seats in the 560
6.. Boot Spoiler is an add-on extra.
7.. The badge on the boot lid!!
Regards
Alec

Alec,

All U.S. SECs were electronic speedometers. I didn't read yours carefully
enough to realize you have a Euro that "might" have a mechanical speedo. If
someone can verify that yours is an electronic speedo, then the Dakota
Digital solution is around $85 and fifteen minutes work to install. I put a
3.07:1 in my '87 560SEC in place of the stock 2.47:1 unit. BIG difference in
drivability!! Between the H&R springs, slotted rotors, new Bilsteins, and
the limited slip differential, it's a completely different car than the one
I purchased in 1996.

It took me about fifteen minutes to install the DD SGI-5 behind the
instrument cluster and then with the help of a GPS unit, another half-hour
to calibrate it. I calibrated it at 45mph, then just HAD to check it out at
90 mph to verify. It was accurate, but I really should check it out at 125
just to make sure. :-)

Later,

Mike R.

What do you do about the speedo now?

I don't care that it reads gibberish but I'm scared to break it when I wind
it so far off the clock.

Any advice???
