[W126 Coupe] Wheels & Tires

A primary reason to maintain the same diameter rim/tire combination is to
keep the speedometer calibrated. Minor variations (e.g., 4.5%) won't make
much difference in performance. That said, I added a Dakota Digital SGI-5
universal speedometer adapter to my SEC when I put in a 3.07:1 differential
in place of the stock 2.47:1 unit. It took fifteen minutes to install it,
then another half hour to calibrate it to the GPS device I had handy. Which
all boils down to: don't worry about tire sizes. Get something that looks
good and doesn't rub anywhere, then you can adjust the speedometer yourself,
if required. The SGI-5 is only $80, probably less than a professional
speedometer calibration would cost.

Do all SECs have electronic speedometers or were some of the early ones
mechanical?

Bob,

The correct tire in 16", 225 width is a 55 profile. The same tire in a 60
profile will result in a wheel that is 67.6 cm in diameter, or about 4.5%
larger than standard (15", 205/65 = 64.8 cm).

Most experts opinions that I have seen discourages changing the overall
wheel diameter by more than 4%.

I used to have 16" wheels with 225/55 tires and they fit the car very well
(1990 560 SEC). Better performance than stock with no harshness or other
ride issues.

Now I use 17" rims with 245/45 up front and 275/40 at the rear and the 16"
were a better comfort/performance compromise. The 17" lean more towards
performance.

I'm bidding on 16" wheels from one guy and tires from another. Can I use
225-60R-16" tires on my 1983 380 SEC? I'm presently running on 205-65R-15".
What's the difference and how will it effect my car.???

Thanks guys.
