[W126 Coupe] Satish or Any long Term Me/Be Tech Please

Hi All,

I have been rebuilding Jaguar XK motors since 1966, Ford & Chevy & Mopar 
motors since about 1965 and so on.
My 1989 560 SEC (it has 173,000) is soon going to need to have the heads done 
and I want to do it here myself.
I really need an experienced voice to let me know what I am up against and 
what reference material I will need.
Can any auto machine shop resurface the heads & go over the Valves or must it 
be a Me/Be specialized shop?
Is this something that I can tackle on alone and are there special tools that 
I will need?
The only shop that I trust is my local Me/Be dealer and they are willing to 
give me 20% off the total bill parts included. That still is costly.
Besides the heads & chain guides & gaskets what else should I do? (Chain, 
tensioner, fuel distr., etc. were done @ 160,000). Motor has great compression 
and burns no oil.
I am preparing to do this starting April but I want to prepare myself for the 
job now.
I want to read up and be ready in advance.
