Iain,
It is not advisable to jump the switch. If the starter was to engage while the "D" was selected, you could end up with the car going through a wall or whatever you are parked in front of. The ultimate answer would be to replace the switch completely (or at least re-mount it to it's correct position) However, as this is a little more involved, the switch should also engage while Neutral is selected and may prove to be easier to select without slamming the selector lever around.
hope this helps,
Vance.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] 1986 560 SEL
Looking for some advice all you electrical genius's. Our 1986 560 SEL has on occasion not wanted to engage the starter without pushing forward on the shift lever. Or pulling it back into drive and slamming into park. This to me indicates that the starter/park position switch is defective or out of position. Of course it is now -30 degrees out side and the starter motor will not activate.
Question is there a way to jump this switch/circuit, S16/1,without crawling under the car??
Thanks, Iain
