I had mine reconditioned - the guy put in new balls and bearings and a reconditioning kit (which consists only of gaskets). The results are perfect, as far as I can tell - no play at all!! I did print out Mercedes service manual extracts referring to the Mercedes steering box - I don't know how much that helped the process.
It cost me $45 for the reconditioning kit, which I supplied, and he charged $485 (all Australian dollars, total of $417USD at current exchange rates).
Start by looking up power steering experts in the yellow pages and talk to them, might save yourself many dollars :)

PS Before I got to the steering I had the ball joints and tie rod ends changed and the steering and suspension geometry adjusted back to factory specs (Caster, chamber and toe) as well as the rear suspensions (chamber and toe), and got a new set of tyres.
