It's in the front of the engine, the rocker cover breather on the drivers side connects just to the right of where the air idle valve is.  Do a search on any parts site and you will see what one looks like.

I'm quite curious how your mechanic thinks it's OK to send your car home idling @ 12-1300rpm's..  does this fellow specialise in MB's?

	I'm going to wager that there is either a vacuum leak you are unaware of or the connection to the air idle valve is not 100%.  There is the possibility that during said work the idle valve or the idle relay experienced an issue, but it is unlikely.  
	
	There is no external idle adjustment on these cars.  Also check your throttle linkage (all of it) for binding..esp. on the pivot for the 2ndary butterfly/cruise control etc.
