You retard the ignition and both your performance and fuel mileage will
suffer.

I was told if you would like to run 87 octane in a car that
requires 91 octane, theoretically you could just retard the ignition by
2 degrees.. I mentioned this to someone else for a second opinion and
was then told that I could actually travel further on 91 octane than I
could on 87, so adjusting the ignition to save on gas prices wouldn't
make much sense. What do you think?
