Hi Group,
Does anyone here have a clue as to where I can get matching grey moquette
for
the rear parcel tray (between the back window and the rear seat top) of my
89
560SEC.
Mine got like shredded wheat from the sun and I removed it as it looked real
bad.
I also want to recover the 2 box covers in the back too so that it all will
match.
Thanks
Jack

My passenger door has started to fail at latching fully. No matter if I
close it gently or slamming it, it never clicks. It catches on the first
'click' so the door stays shut but it never seals. I noticed that if I push
the door against the car, its almost like its being kept from fully closing.
It typically stops about 1/4 inch away from the rest of the car (glass is
about 1/4 away from the rubber). Rolling down the window does not help. I
will see if I can adjust the strike to line it up better, but it really
seems like something is blocking the door from closing fully. I checked
around the edge to make sure there wasn't anything blocking the door, but
didn't see anything. Any thoughts? Could the strike just go completely out
of whack?
Thanks,
Tad

On some cars used in the 1987 model year, there was a special version
of the radio that required a special Becker tool to reactivate the
radio (enter the code). This special tool is only found at dealers
and is inserted through the cassette door, and the radio is
reactivated that way. I can't remember if it's a BE754 or BE780, but
it is one of the two.
Some dealers don't charge for this service, others (such as my dealer
here in Portland, Don Rasmussen Co.) charge $35 for about 1 minute
worth of work....
I had one of these radios on my 1987 560SL and ditched it as soon as
possible for a one-piece radio out of a 1991 MB, which maintains most
of the same look but allows you to enter the code from the keypad
directly to reactivate the radio.
If you cut power to one of these radios it will require you (or if
you have a MY 1987 Becker, the dealer) to enter the code. I believe
there is a way to set the MY 1987 radios, using an internal button
battery (that is long depleted by now) to retain the memory so that
when power is cut, you don't have to run to the dealer to have them
re-enter the code.
Also, I have heard, but do not have direct evidence of, a way to
actually disable this anti-theft mechanism so that you don't have to
ever enter codes again.
My advice:
a) call Ed Ebel at Becker North America (toll-free number posted at
www.beckerautosound.com) to discussion options/capability to disable
code permanently
or
b) just replace with a slightly more modern radio that you can
directly enter the code from. If you stay reasonably in the same time
frame, it should be 100% plug and play.
Cheers,
Gerry

No, the hinges sag so the striker is no longer aligned.

Tad,
It almost certainly is the hinges, but before buying new ones, try plenty of
WD40 on them and let it penetrate by swinging the door from side to side
several times.

You might try lowering the window a bit then close. If it's easier then
it's possible your upper seal has hardened perhaps more so than usual if
you are in a colder climate just now. You should check the door
alignment with the rear pillar as well. If the door is sagging the
pillar strike can be raised to compensate and by the same process you
can move the strike on the pillar outward a bit to improve the catch and
reduce the slamming when attempting to close.
To better understand what is out of alignment height wise I use a piece
of paper with grease spread on the back. Set the paper on the strike.
Place a dab of grease on the door pin and gently close until the pin
makes contact with the paper. From this you can deduce the alignment on
the strike and make your adjustments so the pin is dead center as
opposed to off-center on the circle the paper has formed/marked and the
center point of the pin in the circle. A bit of grease in the right
place may help too.

Old Trabants still chugging along
By Petru Clej
BBC News
In East Germany the ubiquitous Trabant ran on cheap, dirty fuel
It was East Germany's answer to the Volkswagen: cheap, agonisingly slow and
notoriously unreliable.
The Trabant can still be seen on Germany's roads - a stubborn survivor of
the defunct communist regime.
Trabi fans are preparing to mark the 50th birthday of a car that inspired
numerous jokes.
It belches out fumes that breach anti-pollution regulations - but Germany
has made an exception for it as no more have been produced since 1991.
The Zwickau plant churned out some three million Trabants, made of
plasticised cotton waste, called Duroplast.
TRABANT JOKES
How do you double the value of a Trabant? Fill up its petrol tank
Why doesn't a Trabant have seat belts? It might be mistaken for a
rucksack.
Why does the Trabi have a heated rear window? It keeps your hands warm
while you push it
The first car rolled off the production line on 7 November 1957 - the 40th
anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, which the GDR celebrated with its
big brother, the Soviet Union.
The Trabant's two-stroke engine could push the car to the dizzying speed of
90km per hour (56mph).
Its signature tune - "dang, dang, dang" - remains unmistakable.
"Many of its owners just love that sound," Helmuth Frauendorfer, a
broadcaster with MDR German public radio, told BBC News.
"The Trabi disappears and there is a lot of nostalgia in the eastern part of
Germany, not necessarily political. People long for the atmosphere of the
pre-1989 years. Some of the Trabants have become collectors' items," he
said.
Today there are 52,432 Trabant cars in Germany, making them more numerous
than Jaguars in a country of fast car lovers, the news website Der Spiegel
reports.
A Trabant defies political change in Templin, eastern Germany
Trabi-mania is not confined to East Germany. Aficionados can be found in
other former communist countries, such as Hungary and Romania.
Serban Pretor, who works for Romania's audiovisual council, owns not one,
but two Trabants. The one he still drives was purchased in 1978 and the
other - a collector's item - in 1980 and is carefully preserved in his
garage.
Mr Pretor inherited his love of the Trabant from his father, a former
fighter pilot, who bought his first car in 1972.
Serban Pretor was embroiled in a famous incident involving his Trabant,
widely reported by the Romanian press.
In 2004 he was roughed up by two agents in the secret service which protects
dignitaries, who were trailing his Trabant on a busy road.
They claimed in court that his attempt to overtake the car in front had
surprised them, forcing them to end up off the road, an allegation Mr Pretor
denies.
The Trabant is slowly disappearing. But 17 years after the collapse of the
Berlin Wall 82 drivers' clubs all over Germany are gearing up for a year of
parties - to show that despite all the jokes, the Trabi still has the last
laugh.
