You are correct...these cars are all about condition and maintenance. The
"book" is meaningless when it comes to cars like these, as a car with $10K
in maintenance over the last 4-5 years, in mint shape, does not sell for
$4K.

The cars that DO sell for $4K need $6K worth of work to be made right.
There's no doubt you can find one for $5K or less, but A. There's a reason
it sells for that price and B. You'll wind up doubling its price in needed
repairs.

With these cars, buy the best maintained one you can afford, because if the
previous owner(s) let things go, guess who is going to pay for it?
