Swapping transmissions, figure 2 days...Swapping VB'ies, 2 hours max :-P

Why not swap the whole trans? Or is the valve body easier to do?

Jonathan,
I've been trying to assess the time involved for the exchange if I have
both cars side by side on racks to replace the valve bodies. Any SWAG's
(Silly Wild Assed Guess) on the time?

Interesting, well, I would take the valve body from the good trans and
install it in the not so good transmission. Just be aware of the
plastic 'catch/slot' on the drivers side..if you don't engage that it
Really won't work. Also, there is a small spring loaded piece of
plastic that rests in the valve body..when you drop the VB, don't turn
it over, have a look @ where it sits..should you lose track I do have
that info in my machine.
Also, pay attention to where the 3 short bolts go on the VB..I want to
say they are on the passenger side but most of the transmissions I have
been working on of late are out of the car.
All it takes is the tiniest piece of gunk to make it's way into the
VB..similar pieces could all but never be found.

Jonathan,
Disconnecting the kick down switch was no help for the shift problem.
OK, I have a 1990 560 SEC parts car sitting next to my garage with a
running engine/transmission. What's best? Swap transmissions or just
clean out the valve body? By the way, the transmission shop said there
was no debris in the pan.

Hello Mark,
Sadly, nothing really..to do the job properly one needs to drop the
valve body and disassemble/clean the unit. Rather tricky w/o diagrams
and a familiarity w/ what is hiding in there!
I'll be curious to hear how you make out w/ the KD.

The car has 105000 mile and no I did not check the kick down switch. I
will in the morning. What can I use to flush the gunk from the valve
body?

Did anyone check to see if the kick down switch is stuck?
I'd unplug it just to be sure. Also might check the linkage make sure
it hasn't slipped Way out of adjustment.
Typically when I see mod's fail you still have all your forward gears.
Could also be some gunk has made its way into the valve body.
How many miles on the car?

Hi all,
3 days ago I'm driving my 91 560 SEC and everything is great. I get on
the freeway and punch it to get to speed. The car shifts to second and
stays there. Checked the fluid level and it was low so I put some in.
Problem remains. Took the car into a local tranny shop and had them
replace the fluid and filter including draining the torque converter.
Problem remains. I've got reverse, 1st and 2nd and nothing else. Did
some searching in the archives and concluded it might be the modulator.
Any ideas?
