Chet, Thanks so much for the *not so cool piece*. I need to do the same
thing as in traffic I'm hitting 100 C. and a little over 80 C on the
open road at 98-99 degrees ambient outside temperature here in Houston
for the last week or so.
I need to delay the purchase of a new radiator a bit longer so I"m
going to try a temporary solution that was recommended in the Mercedes
Benz Technical Companion, compiled by the MBCA and written by Frank King
a Technical Writer for the book in 1993.
Many probably know of this product called WaterWetter made by Red Line
Synthetic Oil Corp. Several of my Hot Rod buddies use this products well
as some others like Purple Ice. The temp should drop about 10 degrees
according to the manufacturer and more if it is used with a mix of
less than the normal 60/40 or 50/50 antifreeze/ water mixture. Some use
it with 0 antifreeze or about 10% antifreeze simply for the lubricating
aspects. The article can be found on page 36 of the MB Technical
Companion if you would like more info. Since it has been 14 years since
Mr. King wrote the article I phoned Red Line and talked to a technical
adviser and he assured me that no harm would result to a 1990 560 MB
engine or any other parts. It will not solve a problem like a restricted
radiator it will simply lower the water temp a few degrees for these
incredibly hot days.
I'm putting it in the radiator Sunday evening and will report the
results to the group in a week unless anyone here has any disaster
stories while using this or similar products. Thanks
Doug
