[W126 Coupe] Air Bags

The answer is a question: What have you got to lose? ; )

Actually, it'd be nice to have data on airbags having deployed
after their expiration date, but I'll bet the data isn't out
there. Moreover, the data would be merely anecdotal, wouldn't
it? How many data points do we suppose exist?

It's an interesting question from a socio-economic-political
point of view, too, though. After all the back and forth in the
70s about mandatory safety equipment, how many of us are choosing
to drive w/o an airbag (which is, essentially, what we are doing
if our airbags are out of date according to their designers)?

BTW, here's a scarier question: The airbags sit behind covers in
either the wheel or the dash. IIRC, the covers are designed as
sort of doors that pivot out of the way when the airbag deploys.
What if the hinges (or whatever) have become brittle after 16+
years, and fail during deployment, blasting the cover into your face?

Anyone know anything about that?
