[W126 Coupe] rear ends

In the case of any rear end ratio, just remember that for every rotation of the wheel, the drive shaft turns that number stamped on the rear. For example, my 300D has a 3.31 so, for every 3.31 drive shaft rotations, the wheel turns once, or on my 64 Fury, which has a 5.13, so for every 5.13 times the driveshaft turns, the wheels turn once. You'd want to "tune" the rear end in with your power range of the engine, (stemming from the camshaft specifications), and that would depend on the type of driving your going to do. For instance my 64 is geared toward drag strip/street racing. Its fun to set them up, but can get expensive for parts and driving the car. The less your engine has to turn for a wheel rotation commonly results in better operational economy, but a car can really be set-up to be versital too. I recently sold an 89 IROC Z28 that had and early LT1 350 married to a late 6 speed manual, (from a late 90's Viper). Since the 1st gear was on the low side it was abl
e to pull fairly well from a stop, but the original 2.70 rear end was still in the car, (from its original 305 automatic days) and at 55 MPH is was only turning 950 RPM, so on the highway I averaged 28 MPG. Not a bad balance of performance and economy, but you had to somewhat baby it, because if you were pulling gears hard, that rear would soon be looking for replacement.

I note that when driving around corners at speed my steering wheel creaks -
that's because I'm holding on to it. Passengers hang on as well (to whatever
they can, but not the steering wheel...) I'm wondering how being thrown around
during hard cornering will effect control? Might be OK for the autobahn but I
wouldn't want to tackle a windy road with it.

My 500SEC Euro has 2.24 on the diff casing.
What ratio does the 560SEC run?
The breakers yard is full of diffs with 2.47 stamped on the casing.
Isn't this a better option for me (racing)?
The higher the diff #, the higher the RPM for any given speed, true??

problem. I took the car in for a fuel filter change and my mechanic said that
the fuel pump or pumps where getting a little noisy. I drive can to airport and
son drives car home and puts in garage. I get back 6 days later, car is dead. so
I charged it and when I try to start I had to hold pedal to floor and car
stumbled and missed. Took for ride and didn't change. Mechanic said change
battery. I put in brand new yesterday, along with a new set of plugs. Car almost
start on first click, but then same thing had to hold to floor, barly idles, but
rev's fine. Went out this morning to take in and it's dead again.
Could mechanic done something when changing filter. Need help big time ?

Clay,
I imagine many readers are pondering your mechanical/electric problems for
ideas.
Off the top of my head, I would advise the FIRST thing you should try changing
is your MECHANIC and see if THAT helps!
(I suspect it will.)

Hi Clay,
The only connection I can make between your fuel filter change and the battery
drain is that maybe the filter was not put in correctly and there is now a small
leak which in turn the fuel pressure is dropping and the fuel pumps are firing
up to compensate, thus draining the battery.
Good luck,
Vance

Please could anyone tell me what the standard diff ratio is on a 560SEC.
This can easily be read off by looking at the diff from the rear and is stamped
on the bottom left hand corner.
Help greatly appreciated.
(the 500SEC is 2.24)
Thanks

Hi Alec,
According to information I found searching the mailing list archives,
the standard diff ratio of the 560SEC
is indeed 2.47. (Unless there's a difference between the US and
European models, but there is not
as far as I am aware, especially if you've seen many 2.47 ones around
here.)
I'm actually surprised that the 560SEC has a higher ratio (more RPM
per km/h) than the 500SEC (at 2.24).
I would have imagined them making the 560 more of a relaxed, higher-
top-speed cruiser, considering
the more powerful engine. On the other hand, maybe the 5.6L M117
engine has better high-revving
characteristics, as well as the fact that the top speed is already
artificially limited to 250km/h (with some
RPM left if the limitation is removed).
But still, considering the Autobahn cruiser intent of the car, I'm
surprised.
regards,
Dawid

Vance,
Will the fuel pumps run to build pressure even if the car is switched
off?
I though they activated only upon ignition turned to position 2.
(i.e. I can hear
them kicking in)

Thanks Dawid.
I have found that my 500 revs @ 2900rpm for 160Kph whereas the 560 I drove
rev'ed at about 3200rpm at 160kph.
The 500 is a real lazy low revving tourer.
As I remember, the higher the ratio #, the higher the revs for the same speed.
On Rally cars we were using a 5.3 diff to achieve more close ratio's thro the
gears (as opposed to a std 4.6 diff)
What # is on your 560 diff casing??

Dawid / or anyone else who knows!
Does the 560 have a limited slip diff?
Does the 500 have a limited slip diff?
How do I tell a LS diff when confronted by a pile of diff's at the breakers
yard?
On my 500, gear selector in neutral & car jacked up, if I turn 1 wheel, the
other turns.
If someone is holding the 1 wheel, I can still turn the other wheel.
Does this indicate an LS diff?

the more powerful engine. On the other hand, maybe the 5.6L M117 engine has
better high-revving
characteristics, as well as the fact that the top speed is already
artificially limited to 250km/h (with some
RPM left if the limitation is removed).
But still, considering the Autobahn cruiser intent of the car, I'm surprised.

Dawid

This can easily be read off by looking at the diff from the rear and is

Help greatly appreciated.

Hi Dawid,
I must admit, I would have thought that it would require ignition switch on for
the fuel pumps to become live, but I have seen others on this list mention about
them firing up while the car is stood and off. I will see if I can find my
diagram and take a look. Will report back with any findings.

Vance,
Will the fuel pumps run to build pressure even if the car is switched off?
I though they activated only upon ignition turned to position 2. (i.e. I can
hear
them kicking in)

Hi Clay,
The only connection I can make between your fuel filter change and the
battery drain is that maybe the filter was not put in correctly and there is now
a small leak which in turn the fuel pressure is dropping and the fuel pumps are
firing up to compensate, thus draining the battery.
Good luck,

Could mechanic done something when changing filter. Need help big time ?

LSD diffs have a tag requiring special hypoid gear oil located on the
right lower corner of the rear case.
Most 560SECs had 2.47 diffs with LSD standard. Some 560s with ASR had
2.65 rear ratios.
Most 500SECs had 2.24 diffs without LSD.

Thanks for that Satish.
Any quick & easy way of identifying if a diff is LS?
If I turn the input flange whilst holding 1 side drive flange it should turn
the drive side that I'm holding if it is LS??
If it isn't LS neither side shaft will turn if there isn't some load on both
drive shafts?? True or False??

Alec

Hi Satish,
Thanks for the useful info. My 560SEC has ASR - does this automatically
mean it has a 2.65 ratio? Or was this a model-year-difference?
thanks,

Not at all, Alec... I am way more ignorant than you, trust me.
ASR = "Anti-Slip Regulation" a.k.a. Traction Control.
Electronic countermeasures to prevent wheel spin under
any circumstances. The 560SEC was the first car in the world
with that fitted. An easy way to identify a car with that
fitted is just to look at the instrument cluster. There's an "ASR"
warning light next to the ABS, etc, and there is a big yellow
warning light with an exclamation mark in the middle of the
speedometer that lights up whenever ASR is in action.

Hello Alec,
The 2.65 to my knowledge is Not LSD. However, I think the japanese spec
560's have 2.65 LSD diff's. Also, I think you can look for some LSD R107
2.82's in europe.
Good luck!
