[W126 Coupe] Our Air Bags

Hi Group,

Has anyone here ever got a definitive time as when to change our air bags?
Our newest SEC is now 16 years old.
Mine is an 89 and on the door panel it states that the air bags should be 
changed in March of 1999.
Is that an old wives tale or do we have to change them every 10 years for 
safety?
I have read (I forgot where) that Me/Be air bags are good for 20 years. Has 
there been a real test done or an answer here?
