Dick - The actual problem was that the last tinter could not get the tint to
the upper edge of the glass. You may still be right that by doing it this
way he can roll the window down slightly allowing him to tint close to the
upper edge. I was going to drop the car off but I think I better stay there
and watch him....Terry

Subject: Re: [W126 Coupe] Rear Window Tinting
Hi Terry:
He may well be concerned with getting the edge of the tint below the
inside widow brush. Removal of the side panels will allow him to lift
the edge of the brush to obtain a gap for better access to the lower
edge of the glass. This may be what he is thinking. BUT, the coupe rear
windows use a special 'all one piece' brush design that wraps around the
door pillar and effectively is an outer brush (under the chrome trim
sill), the edge at the door pillar (under the chrome trim door cap)and
then connected to the inside window brush (under the side interior seat
panel). In other words it's all connected. If he messes this up and
separates the brush it will be expensive ($150-20 each side of the car
as I recall) to replace from MB.
The tint installer may not be aware of the special nature of the coupe
window brush arrangement. See if he changes his approach after you share
this bit of detail with him. If not, I'd recommend you do the R&R
yourself and let him just do the tinting.
Just my 2, not a window tinting expert, etc. etc.
