Alec,
I generally run the level within 1/2" of the top of the reservoir. It's not
critical and should not change.
That said, there are two primary sources of leaks from the pump itself -the
fiber gasket around the periphery of the lid and past the o-ring sealing
the plate on the back of the pump. I'd suggest cleaning it all up and then
after a short drive, see where the leak originates.
If it's out the back plate, there is a $2.00 o-ring that can be replaced
there that eliminates almost all the leaking from the pump. Also, make sure
that your leaking isn't from a pin-hole in the high pressure line leading
down to the steering gearbox. BTDT

Mike R.

I have a leak at the power steering reservoir.
How full is it supposed to be?
The level has dropped to about 1/2" below the top.
It seems to be leaking at the black plastic securing knob even though I
have added a fibre washer.
