Hello Clay,
I'll see if I can answer some of these questions for you.
Some questions I have for you gentlemen are:
1 - What codes should I find/look for that will indicate to me that this is
a genuine AMG?
There are none... Only way to know w/o a doubt would either be through
paper work or a list of options that only AMG could have done (ie, 32V
engines).
2 - What options or equipment would constitute a genuine AMG
AMG's was an a-la-carte outfit. You tell them what you want and as long as
your check book could support your request, you generally received what you
asked for. However, quite a few cars went in for suspension, wheels and
maybe a body kit and nothing more. These IMHO would still be a real AMG
even though they are light on options.
3 - Is this car desirable or collectable, low production etc. AS compared to
a 560 ?
Depends on the person, some like the Gen I cars better, but I think you'll
find more people interested in a 560AMG over a 500AMG.
4 - What to look for pertaining to how this gray market car conversion was
handled - quality whys ?
Look @ the exhaust system to start. See how badly hacked up it is/how they
installed the cats etc..
Check the doors for rust.if door beams were installed chances are they were
installed poorly.
Hopefully the car will still have it's Euro bumpers and Lights.
5 - Does the 500 euro motor perform substantially better or comparably to
the 560? And/or is it de-tuned
to comply with gray market compliance. Is emission compliance a
frequent problem?
It's right on par w/ a stock US 560. The 560 makes a bit more torque, but
that's about it.
6 - Does anyone have access to run a CARFAX report for me? That would be
greatly appreciated !
I will get the VIN number tomorrow and post it here.
Sorry, my account expired.
7 - Any additional bits of information or opinions would be much appreciated
!!!
My strongest piece of advise would be to bring this car to someone who in
intimately familiar w/ 126's. A good PPI can save you many, many thousands
of $$$. 9 out of 10 cars I see I would have recommended they new owner pass
on.
