[W126 Coupe] Hot Air con

I get a blast of hot air every time my air con is switched on, after which it gradually cools down.  It only takes a couple of minutes to deliver the goods, but in the interim I get baked alive - well, you don't turn on the air con unless it is already hot.

Is this 'hot before cold' in any way normal behaviour or is their a commonly known problem and fix?  It is hot inside the cabin of my 560 anyway, with four large unmuffled exhaust pipes running underneath (mufflers start level with the rear of the driver's seat).

It's turning into winter here, but I'm only just getting around to looking at the air con problem - Late???  No, early for next summer!!!
