[W126 Coupe] Euro 560 modulator adjustment

Hi Folks

I have been looking through the archives,for the above and the standard 
procedure seem to be remove the rubber modulator cover on the left side of 
the trans and turn the"T" knob,but mine has a rubber external knob,question 
is do I just turn this anti clockwise to soften the shift pattern or do I 
have to remove the rubber cover first?
