Hi Camran,
That depends on two things: how hard you're pressing the accelerator
pedal, and what mode ("S" or "E", if you have the switch on your car)
the transmission is in. (this is based on my experience of European
560SEC, but it should be similar to your 420)
In "S" (Standard) mode, with pedal to the metal (i.e. which tells the
car "go the fastest you can") it will only switch to 4th gear just
under 200km/h [what a
lovely feeling], unless you ease the pressure on the pedal. In
"E" (Economy) mode, however, even under full accelerator pressure
(but not enough to
depress the kickback switch), it should switch over at around 3000RPM
(around 100km/h). On Euro models, even in E mode, if you depress all
the way
pressing the switch, it temporarily puts the transmission in "S" mode
until you ease off the gas - I understand it's not the case with U.S.
models. (i.e.
on a Euro, you can first-gear-start even in "E" if you hit the switch).
In "S" mode, with relaxed pressure on the pedal (say, halfway) it
should also switch over to 4th quite quickly. You don't specifically
say what pressure you're
applying to the pedal, but if it's hard pressure, it certainly should
not switch over at low RPM - the whole point is to exert maximum
power in each
gear for maximum performance.
However, if your car does not switch over with mild pedal pressure,
and only does so when you almost completely let go of the pedal, then
you have a problem.
More details? I don't think I have enough knowledge to advise you on
gearbox trouble, but maybe I can help the more knowledgeable readers
here get more insight?
regards,
Dawid
