I do not know how this applies to the newer coupes but, the 86 300SE had
raised rear speaker enclosures with just the single speaker. I placed a
set of Polk 6.5 coaxial speakers directly into the package shelf
enclosures with a foam back box insert for a perfect fit. As for the
front dash, I placed a set of 4X6 coaxial into the existing dash
openings with 1 minor modification. I used a dremel to cut-out the
front most edge of the dash (this is the edge facing into the passenger
compartment not up close to the windscreen). Removed the edge running
the length of the opening to a depth of 1/8 to 3/16 inch. With the
original cover set in place there is no indication that a 4X6 coaxial is
in the dash.
When deciding on larger than spec speakers as I did, it's important to
measure not only the diameter but, the depth of the basket at various
intervals to allow fitments without a lot of difficulty. The dremel cut
is a 5 minute job. The only caution is to avoid contact of the dremel
chuck with the dash surface for obvious reasons. So, I chose a 1.5 inch
diameter cut-off wheel so the chuck was well up off the dash surface as
the wheel cut into the recessed lip where the speaker sits.
For obvious reasons, new wire should be run and you might as well run
power and signal for a sub in the trunk. I only have the one sedan with
original Becker radio and speakers. It sounds great and I wish the
other MB's had not been upgraded by the previous owners which has forced
me to replace everything where the sound quality was non-existent.

On the SEC I built a new sound deck/package shelf to house sub woofers,
6.5 inch components, rear tweeters and then did much the same up front.
This was on an 83 coupe where I fitted the doors and the dash with
components. Size did not matter where I built to order but, it is a lot
of work.
