Bill,
Call Commercial Radio & Sound LTD in Calgary at 403-262-6194 and
Spektronics Radio Service in Oakville at 905-849-6985. They are Becker
dealers, and they may be able to fix your head unit for you (I know my
local Becker dealer is capable of repairing them), so you won't have to
ship it outside of Canada.

Hi Steve,
Thank you for your response, and the link to the different Beckers is
most interesting.
Becker did respond, however they didn't indicate what could be wrong,
instead, suggested that I ship it to them for a look see, which I think
is appropriate from their point of view.
I did this some time ago with the Becker from my former 1988 420 SEL and
with the price tag for repairs, the shipping from Canada and back, the
taxes, and the hassle with Canada Customs, it makes me reluctant to do
it again if there is an alternative.
Looking at your link to the various different Beckers, I believe that I
have a 754 with some variations
Mine has the same large size display screen as the 754, The 754, has
manual up & down buttons directly underneath the Automatic (frequency
station scanner) I have the same 2 buttons under the Automatic but they
are labelled VK and DK going from left to right. VK is for tuning in
European traffic stations and DK is a mute key
The 754 has four AM station buttons labelled 7,8,9,0 Mine has (7,
labelled "K" for short wave) (8 and 9, labelled "M" which brings in AM)
and 0 labelled "L" for long wave.
So I believe I have yet another model of Becker not exactly described in
your link, (a 754 that says Mexico on the cassette door) not Grand prix,
with a Euro button configuration. I'll snap a picture and send it to you
if you want to add it to your Becker link.
Many Thanks,
Bill Reford

Bill, I'm not sure I understand - did you get NO response from
Becker?
As Richard said, they are a great company and can rebuild your
radio, should you decide to send it to them. You may just have a simple
component failure preventing the FM to work. I'm sure they can diagnose
and fix it.
You might want to look at my web site here
<http://web.mac.com/dakota/iWeb/Mercedes/Becker.html> to see if you can
tell which radio you have. MB did not always change radio models exactly
in sync with car model years. You may have a Model 612 or possibly a
Model 754. If the later, you are in luck as it was a much better radio.

Hey Bellamy,
You're right, I'm trying to keep it original and I hate
that Star Wars Crap (old school, old guy) I didn't know about the
Blauplunkts, will they fit in the original dash hole ? (I won't butcher
the car at all), I'll put up with an inferior radio first.
Here is my problem in a nutshell: the following is a
copy of an e-mail sent to Becker (USA) with no satisfactory explanation:
I own a 1985 Mercedes 500 SEC EURO, the Becker
radio/cassette is misbehaving.
1/ Cassette works well.
2/ AM works well, and Auto station frequency scan works
for AM (has only 2 AM buttons, not 4 like US models)
3/ FM does not work, and Auto station frequency scan
won't stop at known frequencies on FM band (6 FM buttons)
even setting to a known FM frequency manually
(doesn't work)
4/ 2 more buttons (must be Short Wave or something) I
don't read German. they don't bring in anything and never did.
The car was imported from Germany 5 years ago The radio
worked fine, I winter store every year, last year after Winter storage
(negative battery removed as always) the FM started acting up only the
FM band and FM Auto station scan.
a) what do you suspect
b) I'm afraid to remove the unit as I don't have the
lock code # to reinstall (experienced that with another Mercedes)
everything on the radio and the manual is in German.
c) shouldn't the automatic station frequency scan bring
in FM stations no matter what country you are in.? The radio worked
perfectly for 4 years after importing from Germany
then no FM (doesn't make sense)
Am I missing something simple here !!!
Sooo Bellemy, any insight that you, or anyone else on
the list might have, would be well received.
If anyone has a working Becker Radio/Cassette or Becker
Radio/CD (which was launched in 1985) (USA version please)
I'm in the market, I don't need speakers and I'll buy
direct, I'm not big on ebay stuff.

What's the interest in Becker radios?
My guess is either (1) a person wants to get rid
of the grossly ugly plastic-chrome Star-Wars CD Player from the Planet
Zorg which someone stuck into the dash thinking that it really looks
cool, and by replacing it, return the SEC to original.... OR (2) the
original Becker has cratered.
I can understand the former. A stock SEC has
increasingly more value as good original cars become harder to find. To
"ricerize" the interior is kind of a shame unless it was trashed anyway.
But the Beckers were (are) not exactly the
state-of-the-art, even in 1982, and really are not worth a whole lot of
money. I have a couple of 'em precisely for reason (1). Alternatively,
if you're not doing a fussy "restoration" I'd consider finding a
Blauplunkt, which, in my opinion, was and are a better radio. Plus,
they can fit nicely aesthetically. Most people would never know.
(Mercedes DID fit Blauplunkts.)
If the Becker doesn't work well anymore and you
haven't yet investigated why, start looking by checking out the balance
control on the center panel with the window controls. Four times out of
five, it has simply has had one too many coffees poured into it and
there is nothing wrong with the radio or the speakers.
My 2 cents. - Bellamy
