Jack,
In Poland where I live, there is plenty of LPG-powered cars - many W126's as well. The price of that fuel is about a half of the gasoline's.
You can meet very different opinions about such conversions. Some people having LPG installations maintain that this is pure $$$ saving without noticeable decrase of performance or any other sort of problems ). On the other hand, there are at least as many critics of LPG in W126 cars. They argue, that such conversion usually causes major injuries to the engine (I've heard many stories about explosing heads, burned valves, fuel injection system mailfunctions, etc.).
As far as I know, very much depends on the kind of your installation - their prices can vary a lot.

In my particular case, I decided to NOT convert my SEC to LPG-power, because:
1. it's not my daily driver, I don't do great mileages
2. the LPG price slowly but consequently chaces the gasoline price, so the savings will gradually decrease
3. I assume that there can be considerable risk for the engine
Taking it all under consideration, the potencial savings could easily turn out to be lower than the cost of conversion.
Oh, I almost forgot:
4. I didn't want to carry some s**t in my lovely trunk :)

Best regards,
Michal Wolosiak

The OZ Government is paying motorists A$2000 toward the cost of converting a
  car to bottled gas (butane)
Is it practical to convert a 1986 420 SEC? John.
