Jeffrey and Dwid:

Pretty sure you now have all the right answers.

Early models employed a fiber array with a single 1.2 watt bulb up
behind the climate control assembly and bolted to the heater box. One
bulb lights up a half dozen switches and the center console shift gate.
Later models (like 86 and up) used a single bulb with slide out holder
embedded in the shift gate itself. Still a tight spot but easier than
pullingthe cneter dash wood as is the case on the early SEC's and 126
chassis in general.

If you have an early model, check the 2 bulbs in the climate control
head while you are in there and replace both if either one is blown.
They are a lot of fun to extract!
