Jack;
That light indicates that there is a malfunction in the ABS system, and the system has switched off. There are three ABS sensors, one on each of the front wheels and (I believe on '86) one at the differential. A failure of any of the sensors can cause the system to shut down.
And yes, the system also shuts down if the voltage drops below 10v. But the brakes should then operate as normal but without ABS.
But this doesn't really explain why the jerky braking as you come to a stop. The ABS should detect a brake starting to lock up at which point you should feel a pulsing sensation at the pedal. That pulsing should not be present at speed lower than 3KPH.
Sorry I can't help you with your description, but I would recommend having your front wheels removed and a thorough inspection of the calipers, the sensors, mounting bolts, brake pads (pad separation, uneven wear or oily) and pads installation. Something may be very wrong.
Anyone else with suggestions?? There must be people with more experience with ABS systems on this site.
