[W126 Coupe] Dash Electrical Mystery

Your alternator is not putting out the required voltage, probably the brushes are worn out or bouncing. Check voltage at battery, without engine running, S/B 12V +.5-0. There are usually 6 cells in a car battery, if voltage is, say at 10 V then you have a failed cell and replace battery. If OK check across battery with engine running, S/B 14.5 V + -.5. If the voltage is lower than this, take a broom pole or something that you can Whack the alternator with, while your are reading the voltage, if it jumps up temporarily, its the brushes.
These MB's have a fabulous system of shutdown in the event of voltage lose. The computer has a hierarchy and starts to shut down all systems to keep the engine running, If the voltage rises again it will start to turn stuff back on again. You'd almost think it was designed like the human body, that does everything to keep the heart running.

Hope this helps all, this is very common, Iain

Isn't that what happens when a UFO is nearby?

  RKS:
Yes, especially if the UFO has a blown fuse and there is a compatible one in your car.
