[W126 Coupe] Engine Problems

I'm experiencing a certain level of frustration with my SEC/M119 hybrid.

Three weeks ago the engine started cutting in and out on the highway. It was
very abrupt so I suspected ignition failure, but I wasn't really sure
whether it was fuel or electrical (fuel pump relay.......).

Brought the car over to my local garage where it appears the guy who has
been working on my car in the past is no longer there.

After a couple of days they reported that the crank sensor was
malfunctioning and that they recommended changing plugs and wires as well.

Picked the car up and it did not run any better. Now, instead of cutting in
and out, it simply had no power, as if it was running on only a few
cylinders.

Took the car back in and they found the catalytic converter clogged with
fuel. Removing it made the car run great (or so they claim....), however
cold starts will still dump fuel in the engine and cause severe start and
running problems.

Any suggestions as to what I should tell them to look at?

The engine is the M119.960 from a '92 500SL.

I'm already looking for another mechanic........
