Dave is on target recommending Helmut. I would call him whether you can make
it to Houston or not because I'm sure his network of contacts includes the
D/FW-Texarkana corridor and he can probably recommend someone and make an
introductory phone call for you.

Good luck,
Willard

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know the most likely area of leakage from the vacuum lines that
locks the seat backs upright on my 380SEC ? Could it be inside the vehicle?
Or a valve ..not a leak?

Thanks.......Barry (Australia)

Barry,
with the vehicle not running, move the seat locks forward and back manually.
This will push air back through the vacuum lines - you will hear a rush of
air through any disconnected or leaky hoses.

A common problem is the deterioration of the rubber in the actuators (that
push the seat locks into place). These must be replaced - they don't repair
well as if they are leaking through rubber deterioration then it is likely
that any patching will not last long before another leak springs.

On my car, some clever? previous owner had disconnected the line to the seat
locks and stuck a match in the end to seal it. I traced the original
problem to below the driver's seat, removed and repaired the problem (pipe had
pulled loose - I pushed it on the first time but it came off again later - the
second time I used silicone (Allclear) to seal and 'glue' it) and reconnected
the hose - still working fine 12 months on :)

Hi, hope all is well.

I am in Bucks County, PA. I am getting a 560SEL that I would like to look
great (it does look great, but I want it to look "greater").

I can handle all the usual cosmetic stuff...bumpers, wet sanding of paint,
interior leather work, painting if needed, wheel refinishing, etc.

The part I am not familiar with is doing cosmetic work to the mechanical
parts.

So as an example, there is surface oxidation and rust on the sway bars. Or
engine bay metal parts have gotten discolored with age, or are no longer
"polished" looking and instead are just dull grey. Or my AMG valve covers are dull
and I would like to get them polished or powder-coated to show the AMG logo
better.

I don't want all new nuts and bolts, and I am not going to Pebble Beach. I
just want things to look reasonably fresh and not aged or dull when the hood
is open or the car is on a lift.

Who would do this kind of work..sort of a cosmetic freshening of the
undercarriage and engine bay? This request goes beyond the typical degrease,
steam-clean, etc. so it looks OK in my garage.

Also, while I'd like to know the process, I need to know where I can bring
or transport the car.....there is no way I have the time or ability to do this!

Thanks in advance!

SEC Guys,

Enough of you know me as Detail Queen (or Legs, whichever you prefer, all
the same to me) and I have been doing engine detailing jobs all summer long in
my area, and will travel. Just to remind you I am available for hire for
under-hood immaculate care by a long legged long fingered female who brings
perfection to your engine appearance no matter how bad it looks from the get-go.
References are available if my own work and collection is not enough, and
satisfaction is guaranteed. Whether you want personal pride, showroom new, a
trophy, an impending sale, whatever: I can help. Just email me offline if
serious and no raw comments, please, I consider myself as knowledgeable as the
rest of you. Or as said another way: you drink the beer, I'll clean your
engine!

Cheers,

Star Cruiser

this is for Helmut (timing chain)
the difference between early and late diagnosis and correction of timing
chain:
about $400-500 for parts if you fix it yourself (chain, rails,
gaskets, etc)
OR $$$ up to new engine depending on damage when rail breaks !!!)
(when a rail breaks....chain jumps teeth on the cam sprocket(s),
valves open when they should be closed, pistons hit valves which break off
and become like schrapnel inside the cylinder, destroying heads, and
sometimes
blocks)

Greetings, all------

Please help me with a lead. I'm traveling and need a traveler-friendly MB
shop in Fort Worth, Dallas, or nearby in eastern Texas. My need involves a
W108 car, and while it's off-topic for the MBCoupes, you guys are probably my
best hope.

My wife and I are traveling cross-country with our newest acquisition, a
W108 280SE 3.5 sedan---Euro, of course. While it's a common model overseas,
it's quite uncommon to find one in the US, and that's why we wanted to buy it.
We're driving it back from California to Orlando, FL, and have mechanical
problems.

The engine (well-worn, with over 200K miles, but with even compression and
modest oil usage) is missing and backfiring, and it seems two cylinders aren't
carrying much weight. I already tried changing the plugs, and while it made
an improvement, it wasn't long-lasting. I suspect the breaker points are
the culprit, but it could be fuel injection as well. Along the way, we've
stopped at three shops, but everybody says they have 3 to 4 days' backlog, and
can't even look the car over for us. At this point, we're about an hour north
of Fort Worth, Texas, en route to Fort Worth, Dallas, and finally Houston
late in the afternoon today, then turning east on I-10. I suppose the car will
get us home on 6 cylinders (it's even getting 15-16 MPG; not so bad,
considering)----but it would be much better if we could get it some much-needed
attention.

DOES ANYBODY KNOW A VINTAGE MB-FRIENDLY SHOP in Fort Worth, Dallas, or
Houston, or in the general vicinity? I'd love to drop by later today, if only I
could get a strong referral (and also a chance they could look at it right
away, and get us on our way fairly quickly). Please give me the shop name,
contact name, and number, for any shop you could provide to me as a good lead.
Thanks so much in advance----------Jim Rothrock, Windermere, Florida 108,
109, 113 & 126

Jim,

If you can get it to Houston look up Helmut Holder, he is about 75 yrs old
and has worked MB only for the last 55 yrs. He worked at the factory after
the war and sometime in the late 50's early 60's migrated to the states.
Don't bring a W140 car to him, but the man is amazing on anything
pre-fancy electronic gizmos.

His number is 713 683 1526.

Best of luck in getting it there.

Dave
