Try and get Sigla(sp?) which was MB OEM. Second choice is PPG. There
is a glass mfg from Mexico that is no good. The glass de-laminates in
no time so, if some other brand is offered be sure it's not mfg. in
Mexico. Front glass replacement is straight forward. I'd inspect the
rivets and upper roof line for damage or rust and have the glass guys
hold up if you see repairs are needed. Having the work done where you
garage the car or at your body shop is a plus in the event rust or a
broken rivet is found. I've done 1/2 dozen front glass replacements now
on the 126 where in MA the road truly comes up to meet you and with
uncanny frequency. I'd watch the job as it's being done Richard that
way you learn and you can manage any impatience displayed and any rough
handling with any of the details. Also a good time to renew if needed
the rubber donuts that sit on the wiper spindles and the rubber seal
that sits between the drain bezel and glass if you see rust bleeding
through the rubber. Both are removed as a part of the glass replacement
process. The metal area where the old butyl rubber or silicone sealant
was placed should be clean as a whistle after they use the electric
knife and remove the rest by hand. This is followed by a brush on
primer and then the new heated sealant is applied and the glass set in
place on the two lower shelf like holders and pressed to the correct
depth so the side reveals and upper roof chrome trim can be seated
correctly. It's a two man job to get that glass across the MB chassis.
I'd interview the shop owner and make certain they have done Mercedes
(the 126) and that an experienced lead technician is doing the job. If
not, hunt around. The first shop I ever used was recommended by my
Mercedes dealership and the shop was terrible. This is why I offer the
detail and suggest you do your homework and watch the job as well.
Rear glass is more of a challenge to install and you should definitely
inspect for rust along the lower glass/trunk line and repair as needed.
Where I've only done the coupe rear glass (and it installs from inside
the car so protecting seats and package shelf is a must) I can tell you
that there is a rolled clay sealant (something similar to DucSeal) that
is applied in addition to the new rubber seal (order new seal from MB)
is set in place with the glass and chrome trim.
Good luck,
Dick
