Hi Kivendren:
More than likely the problem you describe as 'high rev' is the idle
control module up on the firewall. This will fail over a brief period
of time. Working sometimes and then failing others eventually resulting
in a constant high idle. This would give you a sporadic idle and a high
idle as you describe it. This module rebuilt is easily replaced and
costs aprox. $150 US.
You do not describe a stall as you approach a stop while driving so I do
not suspect the switch on the control linkage that preserves idle while
in drive but stopped in traffic.
I do not know if your MB where you are in Africa has the air slider
valve or not. If it does I'd check the rubber hoses for tight fitment
and remove the air slider and give it a cleaning with a bit of carb
cleaner. Then test it for operation by applying 12 volts to see if you
hear the solenoid clicking and see the valve moving where the hoses
attach. Test should be only momentary, don't leave 12 volts on there
for too long.
If you have the MB manual or if you use the on-line service manual, the
steps for trouble shooting may be of some help. By the way what year is
the 380SEC? There were several model year modifications in the 380
engine management in the US while it was in production so you likely
have the same details to sort out when using the manual.
Good luck.
