Richard/Chris,
The LS6, stock, is 405 hp, 400 ft/lbs torque. Dont know where the curves
cross but there should be enough dyno run sheets on the net to see. The
modified engine Ive bought is in a 94 RX7 and dynod 410 rwhp/396 ft/lbs
rwtq. That calculates to around 475 480 hp at the crankshaft.
Im engineering the swap as I do it. Steve Lemberg is putting an LS1 engine
into a 300CE and were both documenting our efforts with the idea of a kit
when we are done. The LS1 is from 305 hp to 345 hp, depending on the
year/model from which it was removed. Getting 375 400 HP is very easy from
an LS1, and not especially expensive. Camshafts are $400 or less, even
racing cams; headers come in many styles, in iron, stainless, or coated,
short/medium/long tube. No more trying to find a 20 year old AMG tri-Y
setup. The intake manifolds are 3mm thick nylon but designed so well that
even the aftermarket guys cant seem to improve much on the factory! There
are even CARB approved supercharger kits bolt on the HP and pass emissions
testing. Both Steve and I are working to keep the dashboard all MB, even use
the MB shifter. You sit in the car, its a MB. You start the car, its a bit
different then. :-)
The LS1 and LS6 blocks are identical on the outside, use the same oil pan
and the intake mounts are the same. I havent been able to get accurate
weight information on the SEC M117/722.3 but it appears that the LSx engine
tranny combination are maybe 20 pounds lighter. The M117 and LSx engines are
within ¾ of each other in width and length, the LSx is lower.
There is a lot of work to do, from the simple stuff like motor and
transmission mounts, to a proper fuel pump and its wiring, to a cruise
control mount, to fitting a 4L60E or 4L65E 4-speed overdrive automatic
transmission into the SEC. Nothing difficult, just lots of steps to get it
done. Need to mount an OBD II port under the dash, will the SEC radiator
work with the LS6 (it looks to be larger than the Z06 Corvette radiator),
with the alternator and A/C compressor on different sides than the MB, how
much wiring/plumbing work is needed, etc., etc., etc. Even Las Vegas has
shops that can do the driveshaft, custom radiator work, and tuners that can
reprogram the Engine Control Module (computer). This isnt hard, just many
steps.
Stay tuned, film at eleven.
Later,
Mike R.

Right ! An MSD ignition ! I completely forgot about those.
It doesn't get any better than that as a retrofit !
What kind of max horse power does the LS6 create and what is the
torque and horspower where the curves cross?
Mike,
Did you actually perform this engineering swap from hell?
You make it sound easy but it's got to be one
balls to the wall pile of headaches for the first retrofit.
