[W126 Coupe] Schematics

Which is a significant part of the logic behind my LS6 transplant. No EZL,
no OVP, don't need a fuel pump relay with a circuit board in it, no cruise
control amp, etc. etc. etc.

Most of the troublesome MB electronics are going to be removed, replaced
with a 2002 computer that costs... really!...... $180. A seven CD set I
found on EBay for $24 seems to be the service instructions and schematics
for every GM vehicle from 1980 to 2005. Most of the older stuff is service
bulletins and campaigns, but the newer cars have a lot of info there,
including the schematics I need for this conversion. Here's the weird part,
a new engine wiring harness from GM for the LS6 is $1500, $750 from a
high-line custom builder, and around $400 from a regular supplier of
harnesses. Lot more money for the wiring than the computer. I purchased
(non-EBay) a used GM cruise control assembly for the LS6 for $75 - bolt it
to the firewall, run the wire cable to the throttle block, plug it into the
engine computer, done.

Some things MB designed for my '87 SEC are still applicable today, but most
of their electronics are not. Rather than duplicate the old stuff, we should
be working toward replacing it with newer electronics. Nathan, I believe,
has found an aftermarket ignition system (MSD?) that replaces the EZL.

Later,

Mike R.

This subject is important enough to spin it off into it's own thread.

I'm sorry to say it Richard but I don't have a background in electronics. I
have however been thinking about this for quite some time.
If we are going to own and use these cars over a long period of time then we
are going to have electronic failures. It is going to happen. We can pay a
lot of money for replacement parts if they are still available or we can,
what? Pay someone to rebuild the part in question or do it ourselves.
The price to rebuild electronics, I suspect, may be based on the price to
replace the electronics. Seems like a fair price to get a working component
unless you know how much electronics cost.
There are lots of stories out there about a common failure in a particular
car that costs three or even four figures to fix by a professional when it
can be done at home with a meter, a soldering iron and a ninety cent diode.
A new EZL goes for $1300! A common failure is heat related and the fix is
the replacement of some small components inside the EZL.
Almost a no brainer.
The challenge is finding schematics for EZL's and all the other electronics
that WILL give us trouble in the future. There are many variations on each
component.
For all the people that are on this list no one has reported having any
electronic component schematics at all.
This is a big gap in our knowledge.
One that we will all pay for sooner or later.

Regards,
Chris
