[W126 Coupe] Heater Blower Motor

Bellamy,

I don't exactly know where the brake booster is, thus the resistor you are talking about. The resistor for the fan blower motor - a part no smaller than a porcupine - is as far as I remember at the passenger side footwell, upper toward the rear of the glove compartment. Since it was the mechanic who removed it I can't be sure but I think it is placed either very close to, or right next to the fan blower motor. Had it been as painful as you describe, my mechanic surely would have fussed about my decision of not replacing it for the time being. Of course, on your car which is an '83, it is possible that it is placed somewhere else, and could even be a different part altogether. The price quoted to me was far in excess of 100 US, that's for sure...

  Vedat & All,

Thanks for the input; that gives me some more tasks to investigate.

I am becoming more familiar with the climate control systems. I have four w126 380's here ('82, 2-'83's and '85) and NO TWO have identical electrical layouts. The blower problem is on an '83 SEC.

I had been looking for a secondary fuse somewhere. There is no fuse holder by the brake booster but while looking, I DID find the blower motor rersistor! It's UNDER the brake booster, barely within sight not to mention actually being able to TOUCH it. REMOVING it would require a miracle of biblical proportions.

That resistor used to be mounted on the front passenger side wheel fender on the 123's where r&r would have taken 20 minutes if you took a coffee break halfway through.

The QUESTION now is whether this resistor (looks like some coils encased in a metal cage with round holes) is the one for the blower or the auxilliary fan?? Does anybody know?

This brings me to Vedat's comment. IF his problem of the motor not shutting off IS the resistor, the big expense must be the labour to replace it not the cost of the part (the resistor costs about $100.). And I can understand why the high labour cost.

I was about to ask Hein what his porcupine did for amusement. Now I know. Fortunately, it appears that porcupines were not introduced to Benz until 1986 so my models have an old boring black plastic relay/control module. (And it appears to be OK, as does the blower motor itself.)

As soon as I free up the garage space I will rip into the climate control module and investigate the push buttons motor switches.

    Hi Bellamy,

Opposite to your problem, my blower motor refuses to stop running when the climate system is off, but it may give a clue about yours. Mine actually runs perfectly normal in any other running positions, but just goes to lowest speed when the OFF button is pushed, but never stops. My mechanic's diagnosis was that the resistor was bad, but both because I wasn't convinced and it is too expensive a part, I just chose to live with it for now.

I have no idea why Hein is referring to is his pet (:p) about your blower motor, so this is my 2 cents...

      Bellamy,
Don't know why, but I had the same problem a few years back. I ended up changing the porcupine and the motor started working again.

While doing this I did fool around with all the wires in the passenger footwell, so it may have been a bad connection somewhere.

I can't remember what I read and where, but I replaced the porcupine because of some recommendation that I picked up somewhere. It worked. Coincidence?

        All;

I have another electrical problem looking for an answer.

The blower stopped running, to the best of my knowledge while I was driving. There is no power at the motor now. The climate control system has had no problems up until that point.

The motor never made any rude noises, ran silently and smoothly

        The fuse is OK

The fan (motor) runs fine (put 12v to the motor),

The blower control unit - fan speed controller is OK (switched with a known good unit)

Does anybody have experience with the push button controls failing or the climate control unit itself? What other components have control over the motor power supply? Appreciate any ideas..........

        -Bellamy
