Keep in mind that the o-rings in these transmissions get hard with age and
will fail. It is possible you have an internal problem that has been
temporarily hidden with a substance that is trying to soften the o-rings.

The 722.3 tranny in my '87 560SEL (225K miles) died a year ago and the
technician showed me how brittle were the o-rings by taking one out and
breaking it into three pieces. The leaky tranny in my '87 560SEC (200K
miles) is still working but needs the same rebuild, the final straw in my
decision to sell the engine and tranny to make room for an LS6/4L65E.

I did find a guy in Las Vegas that charged $1800, including R&R, to rebuild
the SEL tranny. Your mileage WILL vary.
