[W126 Coupe] Sloppy Cruise Control Control

I haven't seen this particular problem listed, so.. I have a 1989 560 SEC
Euro.  Using the cruise control lever feels a bit like stirring a spoon in a
bowl of jelly.   The cruise control sometimes engages and works great, but
the lever mechanism is obviously almost defunct.  Once upon a time, the
lever worked crisply: up - down, forwards - backwards.  Those days have
gone.  I can now only get the cc to work about 5% of the time.

How do I re-achieve that Germanic precision?  I can't find any re and re
information on the Service & Repair CD.  I don't have airbags as the PO
replaced the original steering wheel with a smaller Nardi leather wrapped
wheel.  

Thanks in advance for any help in re-securing the sloppy, floppy lever.
