Hi David:
If the pump is loud then it's old and tired. It could well cause what
you describe. Mike R. one time mentioned that he ran diesel fuel
backwards through a fuel pump to clean it up and buy some time. I have
no idea how that worked out but, you could ask him and see if it truly
worked to save the cost of a fuel pump. And yes a fouled up fuel filter
could prevent proper pressures from being reached. More importantly,
the inside of the metal filter is paper. You do not want to get dirt
further upstream like in the fuel distributor so, I would do booth at
the same time if you are doing it yourself where it's a messy job.
Don't forget to order the crush washers (4) that are needed to change
the filter (I can't understand how they can sell you the filter without
the washers but hey that's another story). Take a look to see if the
metal line is rusted and order that as well if you see rust.
