[W126 Coupe] Center Air Vent Disconnected

My 1985 500 SEC had a heater valve replaced by a reputable repairman, 
however, at the time he mentioned it would be less expensive if he could 
disconnect the center vents to make the repair.
Now he is retired and it is summer so the a/c only comes out of the small 
side vents and it takes
ages to cool down.  The fan noise is loud when running on high which is 
annoying and my current
mechanic states it will take three to four hours @ $75/hr to dismantle the 
dash to figure out the problem
Anyone who may have had a similar experience or more reasonable way to 
reconnect the center
vents would be greatly appreciated.
