Right you are. I have noticed in the past that smogs are skipped sometimes
too.

Don't forget, not everybody reports to carfax.

Carfax does not check for what service may have been done at a dealer or
non-dealer repair facility. There is no central record for repairs. Carfax
checks on the title, mileage (obtained when the title changes or a smog is
done), any major problems like a major accident or salvage auction and also
a registration check to see if it was a police car or fleet car.

A system like CarFax only works because all the dealers subscribe to it, and
maintain the central record.
Odds are (and I mean, they are strong odds) that the car was probably not
serviced by official Mercedes-Benz
dealerships for most of it's life, so I do believe that "all she's been
through" might be a mystery forever, and
the only clues you have is the car itself, and maybe the service history
book if you still have it (and it's been updated).
Even my SEC, which was owned by a very wealthy (first and only) owner, whom
I suspect only drove it for a few years while it was the
"best you could buy" and then parked it in the garage for most of it's life,
had it serviced by non-official dealerships. So
though I have full service history in terms of invoices and entries in the
service book, I cannot go to a M-B dealer and
ask them for the full history of the car... I would be surprised if you
could do the same.
Why not send some pics of your car? Then we can all see what you're up
against :-)
kind regards.

I absolutely agree... Why waste Millions of Rands on this.... When it could
be put to better use.
If you have some contact that will allow me to view the previous history on
my 380SEC this would help... I mean this car has been through a lot and id
like to know all that she has been through so that I can restore her to
ultimate spec.

Kivendren,
To my understanding (and as mentioned earlier in this thread) Carfax is a
U.S. -only system, i.e. all cars sold and
serviced there have a central record which is maintained by dealerships over
the years.
The best you can do in South Africa (well, while it's still called that,
with the idiots in government currently
changing everything from Airports, Streets and Provinces to whipe out the
influence from the "evil" white
man - sorry, this is really pissing me off) is to ask your local
Mercedes-Benz dealer for a full history on your
car (there is a particular name for this, but I forgot).
Continuing my rant (let's get this over with) - what the **** is a more
sensible name? The (current) Johannebsurg International
Airport (it is situated in Johannesburg, After All) or OR Tumbo
International Airport? This is just to provoke politics again. After the
white government handed over the country in 1994, the plan was to work
together to build a new country. Part of this
process was choosing neutral place and airport names (they changed it from
Jan Smuts International Airport in
1994 for that very purpose), but now they have to go and rename every last
single thing (again), making every white person in this
country (if you haven't been killed yet, or driven out by the intolerable
crime and infrastructure problems) feel totally unwanted
and depressed.
Those of you in Europe and the U.S. (even though I do not particularly
condone everything your government is doing) - you have
no idea how lucky you are. I am a white person in a country where I am hated
and discriminated against because of my colour,
yet when all this stuff happened I was only a kid, I had nothing to do with
the politics. We have to see bit by bit how everything we
hold dear (monuments, place names, historic accounts, ...) get broken down
and changed, how money gets spent on this yet
there are such incredibly serious other problems to take care of (there is,
for example, no viable public transport, anywhere,
whatsoever).
This whole place is a joke - and the Soccer World Cup in 2010 will be a
monumental failure in my opinion. Yet our President
goes and states that this will be better than Germany's, and (just to rub it
in, again, 12 years later) has to make yet another statement
in front of the international community about how we risen above the
shackles of Apartheid. We know this!!!!
I wish they would god damn get off it, and just work to make this a better
country than what it is. Sorry, I know this list is not the place,
this is just a fellow SEC-driver who is feeling very threatened and
depressed by his country today.
Kivendren, as an Indian, I guess you feel sort-of half-way between all this.
The hate throes of our government are targeted against
whites specifically, but all the discriminating policies like BEE (Black
Employment Equity) also do not favour indians, but specifically
only blacks... >From your signature, however, I deduce that you work for a
BEE company though.
*sigh* Most of the time I manage to not let all this get to me, and just
enjoy life. Anyway, this list helps me better appreciate one of the
aspects of my life enjoyment :-)
kind regards, and returning soon with more SEC-questions.
