[W126 Coupe] R&P

We had a thread going earlier about the rack & pinion modifications I was
doing and came up with "R&P" at that time for an abbreviation. I should have
started with "rack & pinion (R&P)" in subsequent emails to designate the
acronym. The primary reason for the R&P going into the SEC is to get rid of
the MB recirculating ball steering gearbox off the frame rail in order to
make room for tubular headers to fit down the driver's side of the engine.
Secondary is that I would like a R&P to get more sensitivity from the
steering, but a close second.
Putting an LS6 engine (5.7L) from a 2002 Z06 Vette in there. With the
modifications done to the engine, the dyno read 410 rwhp/396 rwtq, around
480 crankshaft HP in my buddy's car. I'm getting the engine, computer, and
the exhaust headers, so my HP should be about the same. 1,500 HP does sound
interesting but I think I'd like to start with a mere 480 first. :-)

Mike R.

Man, I must be from SA too. When I saw R&P (I didn't look at the pics) I
assumed they must be some 454 engine rebuilder. I thought you were putting
an engine from a 454 in there? Whatever happened to that? BTW...I met a guy
in a parking lot with something that trumps any 454, I think for the sake of
the MB community you should do it to an SEC: A company called indy cylinder
head company made him a 655ci hemi (the custom part is it was an all
aluminum 655 indy legend, not their other not as good line of engines,
putting out 1500 hp).

I thought the same thing then found out the gentleman was from South Africa
and very likely does not understand U.S. slang. We're used to folks on this
site that have been here for years and pretty much know their aberrations,
as we all have, but this is a new guy. Welcome, new guy(s)!! Ask away.
Hadn't thought about using one of your SECs for StarFest, that might be
interesting!!! Yep, we need to talk!
I removed my Ouija valve for the rack & pinion (R&P) replacement so that
isn't a concern any more.

Michael,
At first I found it interesting that someone asked you what an R&P was! My
opinion promptly changed from interesting to "what the fuck?" If one
considers that the question came from a car aficionado (member of MBCOUPS),
and to top it off he failed to notice the .jpg you attached just below your
writing.
I am truly afraid for him when he finds out the costs of things he will
have to replace like his muffler return springs or how fast his tires wear
out if he doesn't rotate the air in them but assuredly he will have a heart
attack when he gets the bill from his mechanic for the replacement of the
Ouija valve!!!!
Doc
P.S. I will get back to you soon, I wish to ask abouit the Starfest and if
you need a car for it

Well, progress however slight is still progress. Here's a picture of my test
installation of the R&P into the SEC. I'm flying back to WA State this
evening so not much will get done for the next couple of weeks. Still have a
lot of cleaning to do in the engine compartment and need to get a shaft made
to connect the MB column to the R&P input shaft. But it's getting there
though.
What's the clearance between the bottom of the engine and the top of the
engine compartment crossmember in an SEC and SEL? There is a hydraulic line
right in the middle of the R&P that sticks up a little and the R&P mount
needs to be low enough that the line clears the oil pan.
