[W126 Coupe] Is this possible?

Sometimes my 1983 380 SEC just dies out when in traffic. Then I start it up
again then once engage D she cuts out... Maybe after 10 attempts she starts
up again. Then engages in Drive and drives fine.
Question: Is the Idle Contol Valve the only thing that controls the
idling???? Idling is a bit high, is it possible that non-merc parts like HT
leads could cause idling problems ??

Well, I don't really have to, but I do if I want max power. Sure if I leave
it at the setting the mechanic puts it at, it's fine in the summer and in
the winter, but I found using my g-timer that I can make significant gains
in the winter by richening it up a good bit, and by leaning it out in the
summer I can GREATLY cut back on the power loss caused by the higher temp
air.
Also Dan, remember, I'm running the mechanical pre-1986 injection (the only
think electronic is the idle control valve), not the electronic injection
CIS-E of 1986+

smell of a rich fuel mixture. So I fixed the mixture (lambda was still in my
winter weather setting) and the apparent vacuum leak went away. Is that
possible? It just seems too easy.

If you have to make adjustments for the weather, your system is
operating open loop (no control). Find out what control element has
failed, fix that, and all will be well.
