It could be bearings Henry.  It could also be that the brushes are 
getting to the point where the fan will no longer work.  I'd guess you 
could drill a hole in the plastic fan hub or nose somewhere near the 
center and juice the bearings with a lubricant to see if that helps.  
Ultimately you may need to replace that fan at some point.  Anyone on 
the list know the precise point to drill a small hole (say 3/16 inches 
diameter) to get a tube in there to spray???

I've had to do fan replacements (they come side by side) on the 300SE's 
when they just stop altogether due to worn brushes.  A quick test for 
worn brushes is knowing the fan should be on but its not, just tap or 
smack the hub and it'll spin for a brief moment or two.

Anyway, that's not your immediate problem.  I think you just need to try 
and lube it up.
