[W126 Coupe] Timber replacement shifter piece.

I tried a couple of things with the ebay wood I bought and most of the
imperfections were deep in the varnish and therefore impervious to surface
treatments.

Someone said that the "cloudiness" is due to delamination between the
varnish and the wood and can only be remedied by stripping the old varnish
and applying new.

Dan Watt has a nice write-up on BenzWorld on how he did the wood in his car.
A lot of work and very time consuming.

Cheers,

Axel

why not get some 200 grit paper, light sanding and then Spar Varnish, gloss.
Four coats should with 24 hours between each coat and fine sanding before
each new coat
really quite simple

Mark,

The dealer will, unfortunately, be your best option.

I have been looking to replace the wood around the shifter on the center
console as well, but after a couple of tries on ebay and hearing bad things
about sending the piece out to be re-varnished, I think I'm going to have to
bite the bullet and buy new.

I know the wood for the roll-top compartment is $400 new, so I can imagine
the console piece is even more ridiculously overpriced. However, I'm now
down about $300 on useless ebay crap and I have been quoted $150 for
re-veneering - might as well save yourself the time and headache and get
something you'll be satisfied with.

Cheers,

Axel

Greetings all,

As a background subscriber that has appreciated the topic discussions for
some 4 years - I have finally found my SEC.

Apart from the usual fluid replacements and a couple of small replacement
mechanical parts there is only the wood trim around the shifter and some
body work left to be done.

It is the wood trim around the shifter that I am having trouble finding -
can anyone point me to a supplier?

Thanks for any assistance.
