Hi Peter,
With you living in Sarasota, I don't know if you would have the full advantage of using the Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40. In fact there is a whole debate in the mbcoupes archives on using fully synthetic or not on the W126. I can only go off what I have read up myself and my own experience using fully synthetic. The only downside I can see is that it is very expensive. However from my own experience and my way of thinking is if the viscosity is lower on start-up, then the oil pressure would build up a lot faster protecting the engine sooner. Also, I can't say for certain, but I could swear that I have a few more HP than I did before I started using fully synthetic. Thanks for the compliment though.
Cheers,
Vance.

Dear Vance: I own an 89 560 sec, 113k miles, and a 91 560 sec, 34k. Both cars had service records indicating they used 10w-30 castrol. I have been using synthetic in my street machines for years. However, I have not changed the 126's over. Sounds like you know your lubricants. What do you think about changing to the Shell Helix? I live in Sarasota. Thanks for your advice. Peter Weiss

Mike,
Engine lubricants have advanced and improved in performance a great deal since the owners manuals for these cars were written up.One of the best lubricants I have come accross and used for years in my Euro 560SEC is the Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 fully synthetic lubricant. This particular one exceeds the requirements of most cars these days. Also this particular one is approved by Mercedes Benz themselves as well as Peugeot-Citroen, Rover Group, VW/Audi, BMW, Porsche and Ferrari.
Vance
