vance you know what you are absolutely correct i actually did not take in
to account i was in school in 1987 times have changed
i have always used tha rule of thumb 3000 miles change the oil and filter
however (CARS STILL HAD .....CARBERATORS !!!! THEN !!!!! ) times have
changed ....
as for 20 w 50 oil that oil is hard as hell to pump on a coooold phila
morning and this is the time when most engine wear happens
i had a old chevy van with a mech. oil gauge i started it and drove a few
blocks and noticed there was NO reading on the gauge !!!! i stopped and added
oil it was like honey in the bottle.... i had to squeeze it out of the
bottle (20 w 50) it was a cold night i then checked the oil and it was full!!!
(overfilled now) i had it towed home thinking i had a broken oil pump or some
other disaster i finally got to fix things and the thing was fine !!!!(
it was warmer now)
that's when i remembered what i had been taught in school
i would think we would be safe using the info in the owners manual as a
guide
because different cars ( turbo's, diesel, high revving , high temp ect )all
are designed for different oils
and to further illustrate your point modern oils have a S.M. grade (
small round semi circle logo on the back of the oil container ) A.P.I.
service S M/S/L and this means approved for all gasoline applications up to the
model year 2006 or so i think the A.P.I rating was SG in 1985
 A.P.I. = American petroleum institute
