Yup, you can thank Assemblywoman Sally Lieber and Gov. Schwarzenegger
for that. Until 2005 there was a 30 year emissions requirement. Now in
the people's republic of california cars built 1976 and later will
always be required to be checked. 1975 and earlier cars, since they were
30 at the time of the passage of the bill will be minimally tested.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm pretty sure CA requires all the %^&ing
smog stuff forever. I have to get the car smog checked every two years
and if it doesn't pass I have to spend time/money getting it 'tuned' to
pass and then take it back to the shop to have it re-tuned for better
mileage/performance. I have found a shop that will do that but it is
risky for them to do. I used to own a '73 MGB that I had to do the same
thing with.... I am thinking of driving the car back to Florida when I
go to work on my sailboat again and I'll probably sell it there. Do you
know anyone who might be interested?

Might want to check into the law further, here in
Florida if the car is 15 plus years old, you can put the smoke wrench to
the cats.
California is famous for tree huggers and ommission
tests, there may be a loop-hole.

I am a new/returning member to the group. I
own a '84 500SEC AMG Eurocar with 275k miles on it. The car still runs
great with a couple ofminor irritations. The idle speed drifts around
and it is normally toohigh up around 1100 rpm. I think it might be the
black box mounted onthe firewall (I have checked for cold solder joints
but should do itagain). Sometimes the idle is fine but most of the time
I have to siton the brake or take it out of gear so the car doesn't
creep forward. Occasionally the idle drops down to the normal 600-700
rpm.
The other problem is with the heater. I assume
the problem is with abaffle not opening correctly or some vacuum hose
but it looks like amajor project to get to the source of the trouble.
The real reason I am writing this is to talk
about a loud noise thatdeveloped last week. I thought I was losing a
rod bearing at first butnow I think the noise is coming from the driver
side catalyticconverter. I think there is something banging around in
theconverter. Has anyone else experienced this before. I'd like to
justget rid of the converters but out here in California that "ain't
gonnahappen".
