Dave,
As far as the heater is concerned, I had this problem some years ago. The symptoms were that I would get some heat if driving slowly or just at a stop with the engine running, but as soon as you accelerate, the heat would disappear and blow cold. The reason for this was found to be the auxiliary water pump. This was on a 1991 Euro 560SEC though, so I don't know if your '84 500SEC AMG Euro has this auxiliary water pump or not. But I would suspect it has. As soon as I had a new water pump fitted the heat was back to perfect. Another reason for the heater problem is listed in the archives. This is what's known as the monovalve. If it proves to be this that's the problem, you can get a kit to repair it yourself for little money.
Good luck.
Vance.

The other problem is with the heater. I assume the problem is with a baffle not opening correctly or some vacuum hose but it looks like a major project to get to the source of the trouble.
