Assuming no hard breaks--like a bone--my understanding of whiplash is
that it is muscle damage, caused by the rapid movement of the head
further in both directions than it is accustomed to moving, and more
rapidly. Of course, vertebrae can also be dislodged, and then either
not realigned or realigned improperly.

Then swelling makes things worse as the injury tries to repair itself.

Best advice is to seek immediate attention of sports injury
specialist. (Chiro, phys therapist, etc.)
