The rear package (parcel) shelf is removed on the SEC almost as Richard described but with a few other parts needing removal.  So, it's pretty much like this on the 83 and the fasteners maybe different on your 89
:
Release the spring clips on each bucket seat bottom and lift seat up and out
Remove the screw(s) or depress spring tabs at the base of each seat back then lift seatback upwards to clear the upper metal tabs at the edge of the package shelf and away
Remove the armrest upper bolster (can't remember how I did this)
Pull the insert trays after removing screws or plastic tabs
Look to the sides of the package shelf and locate the clips at the base of each side pillar where it meets the package shelf
Lift and shim the center of the package shelf just a bit (bowing it upward carefully) to free the side clips
The package shelf should now slide forward for removal

This is also covered in the cd manual.  Someone may have a better write-up (I hope) I am going from memory 3-4 years ago when I recovered my shelf.  Do you have a copy of the manual to work with?
