Bellamy,
I was so puzzeled by your Cavalier tangent that I had to stop for a moment and list the cars I have owned. I am old enough to have forgotten some but nevertheless I was unable to recall ever owning a Chevy at all! I really am quite broadminded as Ford, GM and British 2 seaters are tied for 1st place on the list.
It is, however, a good question, when does this object stop being what it is and become something else? I think the question leads us to many more questions. Can I turn this touring car into a sports car? Can I turn this into a drag car? Can I turn this into a car that I can afford? Can I turn this into something I want? Of course we don't ask all of those questions at once, everyone must find their own way.
I am fond of the idea of great cars. An XK120 was a great car and if I had one I wouldn't change a thing. Now if someone tried to build them today exactly the same way they wouldn't be great cars at all. They just don't compare to modern cars. But to me, the XK will always be a great car.
Our coupes are also great cars and I see no reason for re-engineering them. Some people do, to each his own.
I just wondered how much it would cost for someone to realize their vision.
See you at the races,
Chris Schafer
(Who is way to big to have a Cavalier.)
